All (or probably 99.9% of sane people) would say that college is the best four years of your life. In only two months at school, I am starting to see why. But you know what sucks about college? Class. Who has time for that garbage? Each night as I sit down to write a paper or do some online homework, I find myself browsing Facebook pages, ESPN.com, and of course, the online poker rooms. What I do not realize each and every night, is the fact that I waste about three to four hours of precious time doing this, and then find that the clock reads 3:00 AM. Naturally, I tell myself, “dude, just wake up early and finish it.” The next morning when I wake up at 11:26 for my 11:30 am class, I start to consider that my game-plan may need some tweaking. But when your ‘Stars account goes from $124.85 to $412.72 in a night, it softens the blow of barely grinding out a 2.0 on your 111 quiz.

For many readers, I am sure you have sat down to a friendly poker game for just a fun time. Others as well have probably sat down with intent to just earn some real money. I have done both, and as of late, since my closest poker buddies have not been around, I have found myself playing to earn some decent side money. It may have been a blessing (or disaster) that I found a poker room just down the road, about a ten minute bike ride away from my dorm. Walking into the room and hearing the unique sound of chips clashing, cards shuffling, and donkeys making some of the dumbest comments ever – it is hard not to get a rush. Cash in a hundred bucks or so for a $1/$2 no-limit hold ‘em game, leave with $250 a couple hours later. Poker is a game that, for many, is easy to fall in love with. Though many do not understand the true intricacies of the game, it is a game that brings together all people from different walks of life.

Last night, I saw some man who looked like Grizzly Adams blow through a couple of hundred bucks in about twenty minutes or so. I figured it must have not of been a big deal, but damn did it look like he couldn’t afford to lose that kind of money, even as a fifty year-old man or however old he was. Hell, he should have used that money to chop off the greasy mullet he was rockin’ but he probably thought he was a badass when he took his Harley-Davidson jacket off the back of his chair and tossed it over his shoulder. This image he was trying to present was quickly damaged when he picked up a plastic grocery bag a picked up a couple of empty beer bottles and cans that were sitting around the room. Sir, maybe the $1.20 can pay your small blind next time.

Fact is, poker is attractive to so many different kinds of people, regardless of their backgrounds. Regardless if you are a wealthy businessman or Grizzly Adams (who, let me remind you, has to collect empty cans to pay his buy-ins), donkey or world champ, poker finds a way to you. Though I have class in a couple of hours and have not done the homework, reading, or studying for it, I find myself currently writing about poker. What a coincidence, eh? If you have not experienced the game, I highly recommend doing so. It is easy to fall in love with, though maybe not as easy as many of the donkeys on campus who have found themselves in love with the Obama cult (that is another story). Until next time folks, I’m all in.
