In a world of digital music, domineering record labels, and failing radio ratings, one record label marches on.

One record label continues to expose up and coming artists and does not restrict their creativity. That record label is Sub-Pop Records. You have heard of their bands, but you probably haven’t heard of them. That’s how it should be.

For 20 years, Sub-Pop has been giving some great artists a chance at fame. Currently, Sub-Pop has The Shins, Iron and Wine, Wolf Parade, The Postal Service, and Fleet Foxes (among others) on their label. In the 90s, Sub-Pop was a budding indie record label that was born in the Seattle underground. Music as we know it would not be the same without Sub-Pop. Before the Nevermind album and before Kurt Cobain was an iconic martyr, Sub-Pop discovered Nirvana in Seattle’s muddy underbelly and released their debut album Bleach. Before anyone gave a shit about Chris Cornell and before their song “Black Hole Sun” was beat to death by Rock Band, Sub-Pop released Soundgarden’s debut EP, Screaming Life. One of the most consistent and respected Indie-labels, Sub-Pop continues to impress by being on the cutting edge of music.

Enough about this record-label’s Godliness, who should you be listening by them? If you like grunge, listen to Nirvana’s first album Bleach. It’s about as pure as it gets. Like something a little more laid back? Try Sub-Pop alums Rogue Wave and their sweet indie ballads. Looking for a laugh? Sub-Pop has got you covered with the comedy sensation The Flight of the Conchords. If none of these catch your interest then please turn off the radio and go to their website (www.subpop.com). After all, it’s what you should be listening to.
